Area Converter
Convert an area between metric, imperial and land-area units, using a single conversion or a grouped multi-unit table.
Enter an area, choose the source unit, and convert it instantly to another common metric, imperial or land-area unit.
Area conversions use fixed mathematical relationships and do not require external data.

Conversion Breakdown
Source value × source-unit-to-square-metres factor ÷ target-unit-to-square-metres factor. Displayed decimals may be rounded; internal values are not.
Example: 100 square metres to square feet
Static example: 100 ÷ 0.09290304 ≈ 1,076.391041 square feet. Decimal Places controls display rounding without changing the calculation.

Quick conversion references
These are static reference relationships, not results calculated from your inputs.
- 1 m² ≈ 10.7639 ft².
- 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m².
- 1 acre ≈ 4046.856 m².
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m².
- 1 hectare ≈ 2.47105 acres.
- 1 square mile = 640 acres.
- 1 km² = 100 hectares.
Area is not length
Area units scale by squared length, so area conversions are not the same as converting the underlying linear unit. For example, 1 foot is 0.3048 metres, while 1 square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 square metres.
Exact relationships, readable display
The converter multiplies the source value by its fixed square-metre factor, then divides by the target unit’s square-metre factor. It does not use rounded displayed results as intermediate values.
- Auto uses up to two decimals for absolute values of 1,000 or more, four for values of at least 1, and six below 1. Unnecessary trailing zeros are removed.
- Use Decimal Places to select another display precision. Very small values below 0.000001 and very large values of 10²¹ or more use scientific notation when normal decimal display becomes impractical.
- International inch, foot, yard and mile definitions are used. Browser arithmetic has finite numeric precision even when unit relationships are defined exactly.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert square metres to square feet?
Divide square metres by 0.09290304. One square metre is approximately 10.7639104167 square feet.
How do I convert square feet to square metres?
Multiply square feet by 0.09290304. For example, 100 square feet equals 9.290304 square metres.
How many square metres are in an acre?
One acre is 4046.8564224 square metres using the international foot definition.
How many acres are in a hectare?
Divide 10,000 by 4046.8564224. One hectare is approximately 2.47105381 acres.
How many acres are in a square mile?
One square mile equals 640 acres.
Why are area conversions different from length conversions?
Area measures two dimensions. The linear conversion factor is squared: one foot equals 0.3048 metres, so one square foot equals 0.3048² = 0.09290304 square metres.
A mathematical area conversion utility only. It does not calculate dimensions, material requirements, land values or geographic parcels. Your inputs are not saved.
