Debt Payoff Planner

Model one debt at a time using your balance, fixed annual interest rate and payment assumptions.

Use this planner to model debt repayment using the balance, interest rate and payment assumptions you enter. Compare your current payment with a higher payment or estimate the payment needed to reach a target payoff period.

Results are planning estimates. Actual lender calculations may differ because of payment timing, compounding conventions, fees, variable rates or other loan terms.

Calculations run locally in your browser. Your financial inputs are not saved.

Choose your repayment scenario.

The outstanding principal for one debt. Use the same currency for every amount.

A fixed annual rate, converted to a monthly rate by dividing by 12.

The recurring payment to model. It must exceed first-month interest to reduce principal.

Applied before the monthly schedule begins, up to the current balance.

Example: an interest-free balance

A $12,000 balance at 0% interest with a $1,000 monthly payment is repaid in 12 months, with $0 modeled interest and $12,000 paid. This is a mathematical illustration, not a repayment recommendation.

About this calculator

How the monthly model works

Monthly interest is beginning balance × (annual rate ÷ 100 ÷ 12). Principal paid is the payment minus interest. The last payment is capped at the remaining balance plus that month’s interest.

  • The optional one-time payment reduces principal before amortization. Any amount above the balance is not applied.
  • Total amount paid includes the applied one-time payment and scheduled monthly payments. Yearly summaries cover the monthly schedule after the one-time reduction.
  • At zero interest, payoff months are the balance divided by the payment, rounded up. A final partial payment may be smaller.
  • Target payment = balance × monthly rate ÷ (1 − (1 + monthly rate) raised to −months). At zero interest, it is balance ÷ months.
  • Internal amounts remain unrounded. Money displays to two decimals using a generic dollar symbol; no currency is assumed or converted.
  • Schedules beyond 1,200 months are reported as outside the modeling horizon, not as a completed payoff.

Using repayment scenarios

Higher payments generally reduce both payoff time and total interest because more principal is repaid earlier. This planner assumes a fixed interest rate and consistent monthly payments. Actual loan balances may differ because of lender compounding methods, fees, payment dates, rate changes or other contract terms.

  • A payment at or below first-month interest does not reduce principal under this model.
  • These comparisons do not determine an affordable payment or a lender’s minimum.

Frequently asked questions

Can I plan multiple debts together?

This MVP models one debt per plan. Run separate scenarios for debts with different rates and payments; it does not allocate a shared payment across debts.

Why does the planner show N/A for a low payment?

If the payment is at or below first-month interest, it does not reduce principal. The reference amount is slightly above modeled first-month interest, not a lender or legal minimum.

Does the planner reproduce my lender’s statement?

No. Actual lender calculations may differ because of payment timing, compounding conventions, fees, variable rates or other loan terms.

Are my financial inputs saved?

No. Calculations run locally in your browser. There are no bank connections, imports, accounts or saved financial plans.

Results are planning estimates, not financial advice. Actual lender calculations may differ because of payment timing, compounding conventions, fees, variable rates or other loan terms. This planner does not assess affordability or recommend debt-management or refinancing decisions.
