Landscaping Calculator

Estimate material quantities, job cost and quote price from area, depth, materials, labor, equipment and overhead. Compare pricing methods and the effect of a different material depth.

Use this calculator to estimate landscaping material quantities, labor, job cost and quote price using your own area, depth, material, equipment, overhead and profit assumptions.

Actual material requirements and labor can vary because of compaction, waste, grading, access, soil conditions and job complexity. Use your own assumptions.

The dollar sign is generic: use one currency throughout. Blank optional costs count as zero. Enter area directly; job type does not apply hidden quantity or price multipliers.

Calculations run locally in your browser. Your inputs are not saved.

Enter your landscaping assumptions and choose a quote mode.

Material estimate

Descriptive only. Job type does not change quantities, costs or pricing.

Enter your own material price. Decimal cubic yards, not the whole-yard reference, determine material cost.

Manual material quantity

Use an already estimated final quantity for pricing. The area-based estimate remains a reference; no additional waste is applied to the manual quantity.

Optional tax

Optional customer-total estimate only. Verify the tax treatment that applies to your business and jurisdiction.

Example: Mulch Installation

Example only: 1,000 sq ft × 3 inches ÷ 12 = 250 cubic feet, or 9.2593 cubic yards. A 10% allowance gives 10.1852 cubic yards. At $50 per cubic yard, material costs approximately $509.26. Delivery is $75. Two workers × 6 hours × $30 per hour gives 12 labor hours and $360 labor cost. Add $50 for equipment and $25 for travel, with no disposal or other costs, for approximately $1,019.26 direct cost. A 15% overhead allocation adds approximately $152.89, giving $1,172.15 total job cost. Using unrounded intermediate values, a 30% markup produces approximately $1,523.79 quote, $351.64 profit and 23.1% margin. The 11-yard whole-yard purchase reference does not price the material.

About this calculator

How material depth affects the estimate

Landscaping material requirements can change substantially with depth. Even a one-inch difference across a large area can materially affect total volume.

  • Actual quantities may differ because of compaction, grading, uneven terrain, existing material and supplier measurement conventions.
  • Labor, delivery, equipment and disposal costs can be as important as material cost in determining job profitability.
  • This calculator provides a planning estimate and does not determine the appropriate installation depth or local market price.

Decimal material quantities and manual estimates

Area × depth in inches ÷ 12 gives cubic feet; divide by 27 for cubic yards, then apply the entered waste percentage. Material cost uses the unrounded decimal quantity. The whole-yard purchase reference is informational only.

  • In quote-building and target-margin modes, the manual checkbox replaces the priced quantity with your entered final cubic yards. Waste is not added again. The area-based reference estimate remains visible.
  • Depth comparison uses area-based quantities for both scenarios. It does not use a manual override or automatically change labor. Optional additional labor is an aggregate total, not hours per worker.
  • Both depth scenarios use the same pricing method. Percentage overhead is recalculated on each direct cost; fixed overhead is unchanged.

Profit assumptions and optional sales tax

Markup is added to cost; target margin divides cost by one minus the margin. They are not interchangeable. Optional customer-total estimate only. Verify the tax treatment that applies to your business and jurisdiction. Sales tax is excluded from quote revenue and estimated profit; in depth comparison, tax applies to the alternative-depth quote.

Planning estimates only, not installation-depth, soil-suitability, drainage, supplier, local-price or tax advice. No crew scheduling, contracts, invoices, payments, accounts or external integrations are used. Your inputs are not saved.
