Moving Cost Calculator

Build a moving-cost estimate from your own transportation, fuel, labor, packing, storage and travel assumptions. Compare independently entered DIY and hired-mover scenarios or an alternative moving distance.

Use this calculator to estimate a moving budget using your own transportation, labor, packing, fuel, travel and other relocation-cost assumptions.

Actual moving costs vary by distance, household size, access, service level, location and provider. Enter your own estimates or quotes rather than treating the defaults as market prices.

The dollar sign is generic: use one currency throughout. Move type and method do not apply hidden prices. Distance charges use the selected unit; fuel prices must match the selected fuel format. Changing a unit or format does not convert an entered rate, fuel price or currency. Blank optional amounts count as zero.

Calculations run locally in your browser. Your inputs are not saved.

Enter your moving assumptions and choose a calculation mode.

Move details

Descriptive only; enter your own transportation, labor and other charges below.

Transportation

Enter a rental, mover, container or other transportation estimate.

A distance-based charge. The rate is not converted if you change the selected unit.

Fuel

When disabled, fuel use and cost are excluded from the calculation.

L/100 km uses litres; MPG uses US miles per US gallon.

MPG always means US miles per US gallon.

Use a price per litre for L/100 km or per US gallon for MPG. Prices and currencies are not converted.

Moving Labor

Other Moving Expenses

Enter a quoted or otherwise user-supplied amount; this calculator does not advise on coverage.

Travel Costs

Other Costs

Contingency

Temporary Cash Requirement

Shown separately as temporary cash; not added to estimated moving cost.

Example: DIY Move

Example only: 500 km, a $400 truck rental and no distance charge. Fuel economy of 15 L/100 km uses 75 litres; at $1.60 per litre, fuel costs $120. Add $150 packing supplies, $50 equipment, $150 lodging and $75 meals; all other costs are $0. The subtotal is $945. A 10% contingency adds $94.50, giving an estimated moving cost of $1,039.50. No refundable deposit is included.

About this calculator

What a moving budget includes

Moving costs can include substantially more than a truck or mover quote. Packing supplies, fuel, storage, cleaning, lodging and other relocation expenses can materially affect the total budget.

  • Move type and moving method are descriptive. Enter charges from your own estimates or quotes; defaults are not market prices.
  • Labor is mover count multiplied by hours per mover and hourly cost per mover.
  • Insurance / coverage is an entered cost only; this Tool does not calculate coverage needs or provide insurance advice.

Distance, fuel and contingency

Some moving costs are distance-dependent while others remain largely fixed. The distance comparison changes only the costs directly tied to travel distance.

  • One mile equals 1.609344 kilometres. L/100 km uses litres; MPG uses US miles per US gallon, never Imperial gallons.
  • Base transportation, labor, packing, storage and other entered totals stay fixed in the distance comparison.
  • Percentage contingency is recalculated on each revised subtotal. A fixed contingency amount stays the same.
  • At zero distance, fuel and distance charges are zero; cost per distance unit is N/A.

Independent DIY and hired-mover estimates

A DIY move may reduce direct spending but can require more time and effort. Those non-financial differences are not valued by this calculator.

  • DIY uses its own truck charge, distance rate, helper labor, packing/equipment and other costs. The shared fuel model is added to DIY only.
  • Hired movers use their entered base charge, calculated labor, additional fees, packing and other costs. Do not enter a cost twice if it is already included in a quote.
  • The DIY/hired comparison totals follow their listed scenario costs without an added contingency. Contingency applies to the full moving-budget and distance-comparison modes.
  • Cost is only one factor. Time, effort, risk, convenience and service scope are not quantified by this comparison.

Refundable deposits and cash requirements

Refundable deposits are shown as temporary cash requirements rather than moving expenses.

  • Estimated moving cost is unchanged by a refundable hold. Cash needed adds the hold separately to the current full moving-budget scenario.
  • In distance comparison, the cash requirement refers to the current distance scenario, not an independently entered alternative hold.
  • This calculator provides a planning estimate and does not use live mover, rental-truck or fuel pricing.

Planning estimates only. This Tool does not retrieve mover quotes, truck-rental or fuel prices, use mapping APIs, calculate routes, recommend moving companies, manage inventories, schedule movers, create contracts, calculate insurance needs, book services or store personal addresses. No accounts, database or external APIs are used. Inputs are not saved.
