Photography Pricing Calculator

Estimate photography job cost, quote price, profit and margin. Compare pricing approaches and the impact of additional editing, assistants and deliverables.

Use this calculator to estimate a photography quote from shoot time, editing time, labor value, travel, equipment, direct costs, overhead and your desired profit.

Photography pricing varies widely by specialty, market, experience and usage rights. Use your own business assumptions rather than treating the result as a market rate.

The dollar sign is generic: use one currency throughout. Blank optional costs count as zero. Photography type and final-image count do not automatically change pricing.

Calculations run locally in your browser. Your inputs are not saved.

Example: Portrait Photography Job

Example only: 2 shoot hours × $75 = $150 in shoot labor. Four editing hours × $50 = $200 in editing labor. Add $25 for travel and no other direct costs for $375 direct cost. A 15% overhead allocation adds $56.25, giving $431.25 total job cost. A 40% markup produces a $603.75 cost-based quote, $172.50 estimated profit and approximately 28.6% margin. Six total labor hours give approximately $100.63 quoted revenue per labor hour. No licensing fee or tax is included in this example.

About this calculator

How photography pricing works

Photography jobs often include substantially more time than the shoot itself. Editing, communication, travel, equipment and delivery can materially affect profitability.

  • Commercial usage or licensing fees are different from production costs and are therefore modeled separately.
  • Markup and profit margin are different measures. This calculator supports both pricing approaches.
  • This tool provides a planning estimate and does not determine what clients in your market will accept.

Package add-ons and licensing

Package additions use the entered editing labor value and direct costs. Percentage overhead is recalculated on the expanded direct cost; fixed overhead stays unchanged. Both scenarios use the same pricing method and licensing fee. Expanded revenue per labor hour includes the additional editing hours.

  • The usage/licensing fee is added after cost-based pricing. It increases quote revenue and profit, not job cost.
  • Target margin applies to the cost-based quote before licensing. The final margin reflects any additional licensing revenue.
  • This Tool does not calculate copyright rights, licensing terms or prevailing market rates.

Image reference metrics and optional tax

Revenue per final image is a reference metric only. Image count does not price the job; zero or blank image counts show N/A. Tax applies to the final quote including the licensing fee, but stays outside revenue and profit. Optional customer-total estimate only. Verify the tax treatment that applies to your services and jurisdiction.

Planning estimates only, not market rates, recommended package prices, copyright/legal rights or tax advice. Inputs are not saved. No client records, contracts, model releases, invoices, scheduling, photograph hosting or external integrations are used.
