About this calculator
Gross, operating and net profit
Gross profit is revenue remaining after direct costs. Operating profit is gross profit remaining after operating expenses. Net profit is what remains after all included expenses.
What profit margins mean
Profit margin expresses profit as a percentage of revenue. Cost percentage compares all included costs with revenue. There is no universally good margin: it varies by industry, business model, company maturity, operating structure and growth strategy.
Frequently asked questions
Can profit be negative?
Yes. If included costs exceed revenue, the result shows a loss and a negative profit margin.
What if revenue is zero?
Dollar profit or loss can still be calculated, but profit margins and cost percentage are unavailable because they would divide by zero.
For general planning only. Results reflect only the revenue and costs entered; they do not establish a universal target profit margin.
