ROI Calculator
Calculate return on investment, net profit and return multiple, or find the return needed to hit a target ROI.
Use the same currency for investment and return. ROI compares net gain with original investment; the calculation does not assume a currency or time period.
The calculation runs locally in your browser. No input values are saved or sent to a server.

ROI example
A $10,000 investment that returns $12,500 generates $2,500 net profit, 25% ROI and a 1.25x return multiple.
About this calculator
ROI formula
ROI = (net profit ÷ initial investment) × 100. Net profit = total return − initial investment. Return multiple = total return ÷ initial investment.
ROI does not tell the whole story
ROI alone does not account for the time period, risk, cash-flow timing, financing costs, taxes or opportunity cost. Consider those factors alongside the result.
Frequently asked questions
How is ROI calculated?
Subtract the initial investment from total return to find net profit. Divide net profit by the initial investment and multiply by 100.
Can ROI be negative?
Yes. If the total return is less than the initial investment, the calculation shows a loss and a negative ROI.
For general planning only. This simple ROI estimate does not adjust for timing, risk, financing, taxes or opportunity cost.
